The Pious Bond of Brother & Sister
Rakshabandhan is one of the most important Hindu Festivals witch celebrates the unconditional love and affection between brothers & Sister. The meaning of Raksha is 'protection ' and the meaning of Bandhan is 'bond' On this day , sisters tie the sacred thread Rakhi on their brothers ' wrists which symbolises the sister's love and prayers for the well -being and good future of their brothers and the brother's lifelong vow to protect their sisters.
This frail thread of Rakhi is considered stronger than iron chains as it binds the most beautiful relationship in an inseparable bond of love and trust. This festival also has a social significance because it underlines the notion that everybody should live in harmonious coexistence with each other.
According to the Hindu calendar, Rakshabandhan falls on the Purnima of the Shravan month, generally in the month of August .
Sisters eagerly wait for this festival since, as a token of love, they receive gifts from their brothers.

There are various legends associated with this festival. According to the most popular legend , once Lord Indra was fighting a battle against demons in which he nearly got defeated . To save himself he, alongwith his wife ,Saachi Devi ,fetched the help of Guru Brihaspati.
Guru Brihaspati ,on the auspicious day of Shravan Purnima chanted some holy mantras and tied a sacred thread on Lord Indra's wrist.
This bandhan of raksha made Lord Indra strong enough to defeat the demons courageously.
Since then, on every Shravan Purnima a custom of tying the holy thread on brother's wrist began.
Once Draupadi- The wife of Pandavas tied a piece of her Siri on Lord Krishna Bleeding bound. Highly touched by her concern, Lord Krishna there after considered her as his sister and promised to protect her from evil
Lord Krishna fulfilled this promise in the court of the Dhritrashtra.Once Duryodhana defected Pandavas in the game of dice.
There after, in front of all the country's, elders of the family and Pandavas, misbehaved with Draupadi and also tried to humiliate her by ordering her vastra Haran. Lord Krishna thoughts his divine intervention indefinitely increased the length of Draupadi's saree and saved her honour.
